Simone Gori came up with a similar effect that he termed "the breathing light" illusion. Since we were working along similar lines at the same time in two different contries, we joined together to publish the basic findings in Perception.

The effect also works when different hues are used.

 

 

And even when the background does not go to black.

 

 

The illusion also affects the way a figure within the breathing light is perceived.
